7 Tips for Winter Photo Sessions | Virginia Portrait Photographer
Engagement and portrait sessions don’t always need to wait for warm weather, winter can be a fun and cozy time to schedule them! A lot of clients reach out to me for photo shoots in the spring, summer, and fall, but I want to promote winter, too. The position of the sun in the sky during winter creates crisp, sharp light that makes beautiful images, and you can leverage your wardrobe to stand out against the landscape while also adding multiple looks. Keep scrolling for some quick tips that will help you make the most of your winter portrait session.
1. Add a loose scarf
A loose scarf is great for adding some texture and movement!
2. Include a pop of color
Incorporate a pop of color to stand out from the grey winter landscape. In these examples you can see how red is used as an accent, but other colors like yellow or green would work beautifully, too.
3. Wear layers
Layers, layers, layers! Tights, undershirts, or long johns/tights underneath pants will go a long way.
4. Wear something with movement
Wear something with movement to catch the winter wind: a long dress, a blanket wrapped around your shoulders, a scarf, etc.
5. Choose clothes that work with/without a coat
Choose an outfit that works with and without a coat, that way you can take it off for a few photos to give variety. Here you can see Amber’s outfit works perfectly with her neutral coat on, and off.
6. Consider a studio shoot or indoor location
If you don’t want to worry about the weather, consider an indoor session! We can shoot in a private studio with beautiful, natural light. To make it even more comfortable, shoot inside your home. An Airbnb can also provide a unique, well-decorated setting and you can make a date out of it. Or when the world becomes more normal again, it can be fun (as long as we get permission ahead of time) to take photos inside museums, hotels, breweries, train stations, restaurants, etc!
7. Get cozy
Cozy up with your loved one! If there’s one way to stay warm, it’s wrapping up in a big bear hug. I’ll help direct you into poses that will keep you connected and warm even in the middle of winter.
In closing, there’s no bad weather for photos as long as you’re prepared! Thanks for reading!
